Tarot of Normal People
Intercut - An infinite loop of film through the lens of Tarot. Cards are pulled intently and set to the backdrop of character and story.
Marianne and Connell are two souls that orbit each other through lifetimes. They are signified as The Chariot. Gathering their love, intensity, heartbreak and sacred bond - packing it awkwardly into each passing voyage The Chariot takes as they ascend the stages of life. They grow, separately, and together. But like a subway on a loop, The Chariot holds their karmic lessons up for review at each stop. Marianne and Connell, are asked to abandon their pattern so that they can move off The Chariot’s infinite track and through to new understanding of one another.
Marianne and Connell’s relationship shifts into a coldness that brings them both discomfort in their interactions. They communicate by piercing each other’s wounds. We see them signified here as Three of Swords. Bringing sorrow to each other through a constant triggering system where neither says what they really want to say and each falls deeper into a personal darkness.
Only when Marianne moves do they feel the relief that distance can often bring. Physical space pushes their journey into The Hermit card, where Marianne and Connell learn to be a lantern for each other. Distance expands their longing, eases their miscommunication and allows their words to reach softness and care again.
An Eight in Tarot nods to a type of mastery. The Cups suit represents emotions. After years of chasing each other through painful experiences and heartbreak, the two souls finally reach an emotional, mature, understanding of their union. A structure to house their love. Yet, Eight of Cups invites them to celebrate their transformation by walking away from it. That which was once chased, becomes second, as the soul evolves, it longs for something more. Their chance for Karmic course correction comes, but walking away means that they will be forced to orbit again, once more.
Distance expands their longing, eases their miscommunication and allows their words to reach softness and care again.
